• RGM Barb Bunney on Teamwork

    RGM Barb Bunney on Teamwork

When Barb Bunney was hired to work at Taco Bell six years ago, she was scared and nervous.

“I was coming straight out of the bakery and deli space, and I didn’t know what to expect,” Barb says, reflecting on the transition. “But Border Foods had patience and my managers let me learn and ask questions. It was a smooth, easy transition.”

Before her role as Restaurant General Manager in Rapid City, SD, Barb was a leader in the bakery department for SpartanNash, a large grocery store retailer headquartered in Michigan. When her job at SpartanNash demanded more time away than she had at home, she started searching for a career that would allow her to be with her family. In addition to her own, a big family is exactly what she found at Border Foods

“The people who work at my restaurant are like my own children,” Barb says. “We can’t move forward without being a team. You can’t do this job alone, and Border gives us the resources to learn how to work together, day-in and day-out.”

In addition to the team atmosphere, Barb says that Border’s compensation plan stands out among the rest.

The bonus potential is very substantial, and the benefits and insurance are incredible, she says.

The insurance policy came to the rescue when her husband needed a lung removed as a result of a strange form of cancer. “Border was there to help us through that. The company cares.”

When it comes to goals, Barb is content with the job she has, yet she’s always looking for ways to grow and improve herself in her role.

  • RGM Martika Cox on Development

Meet Martika Cox, our Madison General Manager with big goals for 2022. Martika got her start with Taco Bell 10 years ago as an Assistant Manager for a restaurant in Rockford, IL. When Border Foods acquired the location in 2015, everything changed.
“Before Border, we were just a number,” Martika says. “Today, I feel like we matter.”
When Martika made the transition to Border Foods, she also began supporting other locations. In 2016, on a visit to the Madison area, Martika made a passing comment to Human Resources Business Partner Corrine Kindred about wanting to manage a restaurant of her own. Two weeks later, Martika was promoted to General Manager.  At her Whitney Way restaurant, Martika says she’s constantly on the go. Madison, WI is a traditional “college town,” full of new daily customers. “There’s never a dull moment,” Martika says about her job. “I have an incredible team and I try to support them in every way possible.” It’s Martika’s love for her team that drives her location’s results. Last year, she only lost two employees and kept her retention numbers in the “green.” She attributes strong retention to the way she manages.  In her down time, Martika serves as a board member for Free Sales for Families, a local nonprofit focused on hosting entirely free garage sales for community members in need.  When one of Martika’s employees found herself unexpectedly pregnant, Martika made sure the employee was supported through this nonprofit.
“We got her what she needed,” Martika says. “That’s just what we do for each other.”
Looking into 2022, Martika hopes the Whitney Way Taco Bell will become a certified training restaurant — a goal that would feed into her love of empowering people. And of course, she’s striving to make the cut for the annual Best of the Best trip to Mexico. “I’m close,” Martika says, reflecting on her goals. “I think I can get there this year.” Looking to start your career? Apply today!
  • RGM Nate Bowie on Excellence

    RGM Nate Bowie on Excellence

Nate Bowie never would have guessed that he’d find his dream job at Taco Bell. But as fate would have it, he’s now worked his way into a position as the General Manager at our Lincoln Way location in Wyoming, and he’s not looking back.

It all started about seven years ago when Nate was working at Walmart. One of his co-workers was Zack Schumaker’s mother (Zack is our rockstar Area Coach in Wyoming).

“She told me that I really should apply for a job with Border Foods,” Nate recalls. “I went over for an interview with Zack and Todd [Austin], and the rest is history.”

Nate says that Border Foods took a chance on him, noting that he didn’t have any quick service restaurant experience and everything about the industry was new. But with the right training, Nate quickly caught on. Within the first eight months on the job, Nate was promoted from Assistant General Manager to General Manager of the Casper, Wyoming location. In October 2020, Nate moved to Cheyenne where he managed the Dell Range location, and then he eventually moved to Lincoln Way — Border’s third busiest location.

Today, as the GM of a high-volume restaurant, Nate says he gets the privilege of managing his own “mini business.”

“Sometimes we run $16,000 days back to back to back,” Nate says. “So as the manager of a restaurant at that level, I really can’t be just on the floor, or just with the customers. I need to be part of every aspect. And I love that.”

Nate says that over the last three years, he’s seen Border Foods elevate locations and focus on overall restaurant excellence, a new core value that the company wants to embrace at every turn.

From our customer service to our buildings, to the way we treat our teams, we’re top tier,” Nate says. “I hope to keep moving up the chain and continue to train and develop people.”

One thing Nate loves about the company: “It doesn’t matter what your background is, if you’re a hard worker, you can do anything here at Border.”

    Image of Aaron Engler

As founders of this company, we’ve acted as CEO and Chairman together for years. And while we love being in the business, we know it’s time for yet another new Border Foods chapter.

We’re ready to welcome new thinking, a more collaborative approach to leadership, and more accountability across teams. We’re also eager to spend more time in acquisitions, a part of the business that we both feel passionate about. To that end, please join us in congratulating Aaron Engler in his new role as President and CFO of Border Foods.

Aaron has been part of the Border Foods family since he was 15, finding summer work in the restaurants and aiding the Facilities Department. Throughout his college years, Aaron worked with the Technology Department, learning the intricacies of the back of house, POS and office systems. After a few years as Director of Marketing at our sister company, Delaget, Aaron rejoined Border as Director of Corporate Initiatives, leading special projects across teams. Just last year he became Chief Financial and Administrative Officer where under his leadership, the Finance Department successfully implemented NetSuite, a new Enterprise Resource Plan across the company.

In his role as President, Aaron will lead the Leadership Team, where together they’ll manage operations, development, finance and technology. Aaron will report directly to the Board of Directors as we move into a Strategic Advisory role. This scalable approach to leadership allows us to build a bridge across departments, continue to move away from a siloed leadership approach, and make room for new ideas and strategies.

It’s time for the next generation of leadership to begin shaping the Border Foods future.

Congratulations, Aaron! We look forward to watching you grow in this role.

  • 40 Years With Taco Bell

In 1979, Border Foods founders Jeff and Lee Engler opened their first Mexican restaurant called Los Primos. Little did they know, 40 years later, they’d be at the helm of one of the largest Taco Bell franchisees in the nation. At Border Foods, tenure means everything to us. And we think 40 years in the industry is something to celebrate! So, on Oct. 25, we surprised Jeff and Lee with a party at the Border Foods headquarters.

  • Watch: Border and Carol Williams Scholarship Recipients Revealed

When it comes to working at Border Foods, one thing’s for sure: We’re about more than just making tacos (although let’s admit it, our tacos are pretty dang tasty). This month marked the inaugural unveiling of the Border Foods and Carol Williams Scholarship recipients — an event that took our scholars by complete surprise as Border leaders traveled to a few locations to deliver checks and celebrate with friends and family.

The scholarships were created in tandem as a way to help Border Foods team members reach higher education goals. The Carol Williams Scholarship carries extra special meaning as it celebrates the memory, passion and dedication of Carol — the founder of our family culture — who passed away last year (watch a quick clip about the scholarship).

“We’re so grateful to see this scholarship come to fruition,” said Krysta Corrigan, Carol’s daughter, about the Carol Williams Scholarship. “My mom had a huge heart for her employees. She would be honored and so thankful to know that she had an opportunity to impact their lives outside of Border Foods.”

Scholarship applications opened in the spring with a few requirements to apply. Recipients needed to be actively pursuing secondary education and have been employed for at least six months, averaging an 18-hour work week (as of the application deadline). After we received applications, we worked with International Scholarship and Tuition Services (a third-party vendor) to help us make recipient decisions.

“When we sat down to develop this scholarship, we did it with one goal in mind: to provide a resource for you to further your education,” Lee Engler, CEO, said in a family letter to scholars. “With a mission to Make Lives Better, we truly feel like this gift will do just that.”

Congratulations to these Carol Williams scholars, each receiving $5,500:

    • Wyatt Plavan – Greenville, MI
    • Ian Herman – Fitchburg, WI
    • Daejynae Sumrell – Gains, MI

Congratulations to these Border Foods scholars, each receiving $3,000:

    • Brianna Talaska – Allendale, MI
    • Brittney Jordan –  Casper, WY
    • Tommy Holloway – Cloquet, MN
    • Ryan Little – Middleton, WI
    • Kevin Hegna – Buffalo, MN
I know that I need an education in order to better myself and better my family,” said scholar Tommy Holloway. “Thank you for believing in me.”

  • Introducing: The Heart of Border Foods Award

As most of you know, Carol Williams was an integral part of our business since inception. When she began working with Taco Bell 30 years ago, we knew there was something special about Carol. Sure, she could make a taco, manage a restaurant, oversee an area. But she could also help a team member fulfill a dream, capture goals and put them into action, listen when it mattered most, and so much more. Her innate ability to lead propelled her through the Border Foods career path, moving her from team member to sole leader of our Taco Bell business as the Vice President of Operations.

Over the last 20-some years, Carol both shaped our company culture and encouraged team members to follow in her footsteps along the way. To that end, it’s with great pride that we formed the Heart of Border Foods Award, inspired by Carol Williams.

The award was built to honor the traits we valued in Carol and inspire all Border Foods team members. Leadership happens throughout the inner workings of our business, not just in a corner office. It transpires behind the counter, in front of the customer, in the back of the house. It shows up in your conference calls, your team huddles, your area and region meetings. Congratulations to the three 2018 recipients – Sharla Hennek, Pam Hare and Aurora Tapia. We’re honored to celebrate this inaugural group, and look forward to the impact our culture will continue to have in coming weeks, months and years ahead.
